Everyone agrees Utah schools need more funding. But where should those funds go? Over the past two years, legislators have discussed bills that would begin equalizing funding between school districts.
While the concept of "equalization" may seem uncontroversial on its face -- all children should have the same opportunity to succeed, how this should happen has raised questions.
Should funds that would normally be split up between all districts go to some, rather than others? Should we be "punishing" some districts just because they have higher property values? Should equalization funds come from new revenue sources or should Utah find new revenue streams?
The University of Utah's John R. Park Debate Society and the ABU Education Fund will host a debate and panel to explore these questions and more. On the panel will be Senator Howard Stephenson, a past sponsor of an equalization bill, Representative Logan Wilde, and Justin Anderson, vice chairman of the Utah County Democratic Party.
Join us Wednesday, January 17 at 6:30 pm at the Impact Hub in downtown SLC for this educational event. Doors will open at 6:20 pm, so make sure to get there early so we can start on time. The debate and panel will also be streamed on Facebook Live.
